OBESITY
Obesity is a cause or contributing element in a number of systemic diseases leading to increased risk of mortality.   While obesity among the young is a problem of considerable magnitude, adult-onset obesity is a leading cause of decreased life expectancy, and is a primary risk factor for type II diabetes, heart disease, and hypertension.   A large portion of Shapiro lab research considers possible biochemical causes for adult-onset obesity.
